Cricket-lovers-demand-Urdu-commentary-during-PSL-matches

KARACHI: Cricket lovers across the country are disappointed by the fact that there is no Urdu commentary during broadcast of Pakistan Super League matches.
More than 90 percent of Pakistan’s population does not understand English and so is unable to enjoy commentary, which adds to the amusement of viewers, a survey conducted by ‘The News’ revealed.
It may be recalled here that the Supreme Court has ordered the government to make Urdu the official language.
Pakistan is a cricket-crazy country and all lovers of the game desperately wanted to see international matches here and were waiting for Pakistan’s first professional cricket league, but they are frustrated because of the English commentary which they are unable to grasp.
Former Test and ODI cricketer Jalaluddin said that people were waiting keenly for PSL and it would be better if arrangements were made for Urdu commentary.
He said the PCB’s good work would spread from one part of the country to the other through commentary in Urdu.
Former first-class cricketer Bharat Kumar said that people were jubilant over the country’s first professional league, but it would have been more enjoyable had there been Urdu commentary.
Bharat said there was still time for PCB as a number of interesting matches were yet to be played. “They should take notice and issued directives for Urdu commentary. It would delight the common citizens,” he said.
Mohibullah, a shop owner in Nazimabad, said that he could not understand the match situation sometimes because of the absence of commentary in Urdu.
He said that Indian channels arranged commentary both in English and Hindi, due to which the engagement of common citizens was higher in their professional league.
Another young man Muhammad Imran said that Urdu commentary must be part of PSL matches because it would attract all citizens. “From the beginning of the matches to the prize distribution ceremony everything is explained but in English which puts tens of millions of Pakistanis at a disadvantage,” Imran said.
A group of government school students in Landhi and Malir appealed to the PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan to issue orders for doing Urdu commentary in the remaining matches so that each and every Pakistani might enjoy each and every moment of the league.

Painful to see no international cricket in Pakistan: Viv Richards

Karachi: West Indian batting great Vivian Richards says he is pained to see international cricket teams not touring Pakistan since the last seven years.
Richards is working as mentor of the Quetta Gladiators team in the Pakistan Super League, which kicked off amid much fanfare in Dubai on Thursday.
"It is painful to see no international cricket being played in Pakistan since 2009. I have been to Pakistan several times and always found it to be a country of passionate cricket fans and lovers," Richards told the Pakistani media in Dubai.
"It is unfortunate that security circumstances are keeping teams away from Pakistan because it is a leading cricket nation and destination," he said.
He said it was nothing less than a tragedy that the security situation had left the Pakistan cricket board in a position where it can't force any team to play in Pakistan.
"It would have been great to have the PSL launch in Pakistan. But the good thing is that finally Pakistan has launched its own league and I don't see any reason it shouldn't succeed," Richards added.
No top Test team has toured Pakistan since March 2009 when militants attacked the Sri Lankan team in Lahore.
Richards admitted he was a great fan of Pakistan cricket because of its ability to produce exceptional raw talent.
"Whenever I toured Pakistan I was always surprised to see the talent they possessed. I see the PSL as the biggest platform for the young players in Pakistan to showcase their talent to the world and also learn a lot after playing with top players of the world," he added.
Richards said he was enjoying his stint with the Quetta Gladiators outfit as it had some exciting players.
In Dubai for the entire period of the PSL, Richards had no doubt that Pakistan could go to the top of the cricket world if the players were groomed and well looked after.
"When I was playing West Indies were at the top of the world but Pakistan, with their aggressive cricket and talent always, posed a big challenge for us," he stated.

COACH FLOWER SAYS PAKISTAN SUPER LEAGUE CAN HELP YOUNGSTERS

FORMER ZIMBABWE PLAYER CLAIMS THE TWENTY20 LEAGUE CAN HELP BOOST EXPERIENCE OF PAKISTANI PLAYERS.
Former Zimbabwe captain and ex-England coach Andy Flower Sunday says the Pakistan Twenty20 league can benefit the country’s budding players in the same way Indians have benefitted from their league.
The 47-year-old, who is now looking after England’s youth side and is serving as Peshawar team coach in the Pakistan Super League, said: “I think this tournament will be very good for Pakistan’s youngsters in the way the IPL [Indian Premier League] is being very good for Indian cricket.”
“I think there are five excellent sides and we should have brilliant cricket over the next couple of weeks and we have seen skillful performance and there is a lot of talent.”
The PSL have 69 local and 29 foreign players, with high profile names in West Indian Chris Gayle and Darren Sammy, former England batsman Kevin Pieteresen and Australia’s Shane Watson. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) aims to boost the national team—currently eighth in one-day and seventh in Twenty20 rankings—and to groom some young players.
“I think it’s an interesting initiative by PCB and its important for Pakistan cricket and that it is a success. It has started successfully,” said Flower, who played 63 Tests and 213 one-day for Zimbabwe during an illustrious career. “The PSL is absolutely a launching pad for Pakistan youngsters, some of the benefits they get by mixing with overseas players and gain from their experience and they also get confidence by sharing the same nets and dressing room,” said Flower.
He singled out Peshawar’s left-arm spinner Mohammad Asghar as a player for the future. “The very good example is Asghar and his performance will do him a world of good,” said Flower of the spinner who has taken five wickets for just 31 runs in eight overs in his team’s two wins.
“The other factor is that the league might take away some of the myths of some of the international cricketers and allow the youngsters to understand that they are also human beings like them who are good at playing cricket and that can grow their confidence,” said Flower.
The ongoing PSL ends on Feb. 23.

Pakistan super league 8TH MATCH REPORT: LAHORE QALANDARS VS QUETTA GLADIATORS

Umar Akmal plays a breath taking innings as Gladiators taste defeat for the first time
The struggling Lahore Qalandars team, yet to register their first win, took on the unbeaten Quetta Gladiators who had brushed aside every other team in the league through some great performances. Mohammad Nawaz has been a revelation with the ball, while Luke Wright, Kevin Pietersen and Ahmad Shehzad have all contributed with the bat. The Gladiators had also been really fortunate with the toss in the entire tournament so far. Their luck continued as they won the toss and chose to field once again. Chris Gayle was rested by Lahore and Cameron Delport came on to open the innings instead, along with skipper Azhar Ali. Qalandars had never made it through the first over without losing a wicket in their previous matches, but Azhar Ali had different ideas this time around as he came down the ground and dispatched Anwar Ali for a six in the first over. Delport started hitting boundaries soon after and both batsmen looked to be in great form. The way Delport targeted Nawaz, the highest wicket taker of the tournament so far, was especially impressive, as he played some innovative strokes and was never afraid to come down the track to ensure his dominance.
Azhar Ali departed in the 10th over off Umar Gul as the opening pair put 62 runs on the board. Umar Akmal came out next, as the platform was set for Qalandars to finally get a big score. Delport continued to get under the bowlers’ skin with some fine hitting as he raced to his half century in only 42 deliveries, while Akmal also joined in on the party and took Umar Gul to the cleaners as he dealt only in boundaries. Qalandars kept accelerating their run rate as the innings progressed, and there was no stopping Umar Akmal as he raced to his 50 in only 22 balls. Both these batsmen were absolutely bossing the Gladiators as Qalandars were easily set for the highest total of the tournament so far. The pair broke the record for the highest partnership of the HBL PSL as they added 95 runs from only 43 balls, before Delport was caught leg before off Zulfiqar Babar in the 17th over. Umar Akmal went ballistic however, as he played the innings of the tournament which included ferocious shots all over the park. We had never seen him bat like this before, as he blasted a breath taking 93 from 40 balls! Qalandars had set a mammoth total of 195/3 in their 20 overs, which was never going to be easy for any side to chase down.
Luke Wright and Ahmad Shehzad opened the innings for Quetta Gladiators. Needing nearly 10 runs per over, it was always going to be a daunting task. Luke Wright got lucky early on in the innings, as Zafar Gohar almost held a catch off his own bowling but fumbled it as he looked to celebrate a little too early! Shehzad hit Kevon Cooper for consecutive boundaries in the 3rd over, before dragging the ball onto his stumps on the very next delivery. Wright was dismissed three balls later off Gohar, as he was caught at deep mid wicket by Cooper. At 27/2 after 4 overs, Gladiators were already in dire straits. Pietersen hit a few big shots and there was still some hope for the Gladiators as long as he was out there, but his stay on the crease was short lived as he was also sent packing by Dwayne Bravo. The match seemed to be a foregone conclusion only 6 overs into Quetta’s innings, with three of their best batsmen already in the pavilion, while chasing a monumental total.
Quetta’s skipper Sarfraz Ahmed, along with Mohammad Nawaz on the crease, tried to get a partnership going and played a few shots as the required rate climbed to 12 runs per over. Nawaz targeted Hammad Azam and put him away for 20 runs in the 10th over as the Gladiators began to pick up some momentum. With nine overs remaining Quetta needed 98 runs with seven wickets in hand. Sarfraz and Nawaz turned the crowd on its head with some beautiful stroke play and we suddenly had a match on our hands. Zohaib Khan put the Qalandars back in control as he claimed the much coveted wicket of Sarfraz in the 13th over. Mendis got rid of Nawaz soon after and Qalandars had their first victory in the bag. It was smooth sailing from then on for Lahore, as Quetta’s tail end collapsed and they were all out for 131, with Zafar Gohar picking up 4 wickets for 14. Qalandars sealed a comprehensive win against the best team of the tournament so far, with Umar Akmal playing an unforgettable innings which will be remembered for a long time.

7TH MATCH REPORT: QUETTA GLADIATORS VS PESHAWAR ZALMI

Quetta remain unbeaten after a nail biting victory against Peshawar
The much-anticipated top of the table clash between Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi was always going to be exciting as both teams remained unbeaten in the tournament so far. Quetta Gladiators won the toss and it was no surprise that they chose to field first once again. That decision paid dividends straight away as Zalmi’s dangerous openers, the ever consistent Tamim Iqbal and Mohammad Hafeez failed to have much impact courtesy some tight bowling by Anwar Ali and Mohammad Nabi. Quetta’s bowling attack has been impressive throughout the tournament and this match was no different. Gladiators’ golden boy, Mohammad Nawaz came on to bowl in the 5th over and dismantled both batsmen with some clever bowling. First to perish was Tamim, who came down the track and lofted it to find Mohammad Nabi at deep midwicket. Two deliveries later, Hafeez miscued one towards Elton Chigumbura at square leg, as Nawaz’s dream start to the tournament continued.
Zulfiqar Babar picked up Kamran Akmal next in the 9th over and Zalmi were being bossed by Gladiators’ superb spin bowling. Dawid Malan was taking his time to find his rhythm as Shahid Yousaf joined him in the middle. Malan freed his arms and hit Gul for a six, before edging the next delivery to Sarfraz Ahmed. The crowd’s darling Shahid Afridi came out to the middle but was sent packing for naught after facing just two deliveries, bringing an end to a typical Afridi-esque innings. Things were looking pretty bleak for Zalmi but they were about to change as Darren Sammy came out to bat. Sammy tore apart Quetta’s bowlers one by one as he whacked them all over the park in a fine display of power hitting! He kept hitting sixes at will and resurrected Peshawar’s innings single handedly as he made 48 from 31 balls, helping Zalmi reach a respectable 135/7 from their allotted overs.
Ahmad Shehzad and Luke Wright opened the innings for the Gladiators, on the back of a record opening partnership in the HBL PSL in their previous match. They began to play their shots early on, with Ahmad Shehzad coming down the ground and using his feet well against Mohammad Asghar to hit him for six over long off. Luke Wright hit consecutive boundaries off Shaun Tait soon after and it seemed as if this would be another long partnership. Tait had other plans, as he forced an edge from Shehzad for an easy catch behind the stumps towards Akmal. Afridi bowled out Wright in the very next over, as he started his spell with a maiden and a wicket. Peshawar were off to a good start until Quetta’s skipper, Sarfraz Ahmed came out to bat. Along with Kevin Pietersen, Sarfraz worked the ball around steadily as the two tried to build a partnership. There was some confusion between the pair as they had some close calls with a few run out situations but had luck on their side.
Sarfraz became Afridi’s second victim as he went low to slog one for a big shot but found Dawid Malan at mid wicket instead. Mohammad Nawaz came on to face a fiery Wahab Riaz and dispatched him for a boundary, before beinga dismissed on the very next ball. With wickets falling at regular intervals, it was all up to the experienced Kevin Pietersen to take the Gladiators home. He kept the scoreboard ticking steadily as he lost another partner, the young Akbar Ur Rehman. With five overs remaining, Quetta needed 35 runs, which was certainly within their reach as long as Pietersen remained in the middle. He kept his cool and began to find the gaps with ease as Wahab claimed another wicket, this time of Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi in the 17th over. The big moment of the match came when Afridi took a great catch off Junaid’s bowling to claim the prized wicket of Kevin Pietersen, setting up a nail biting finish for the fans. With Elton Chigumbura and Anwar Ali on strike, Gladiators required 17 runs from the last two overs with three wickets in hand. Anwar hit Tait for a spectacular six in the second last over, and Chigumbura held his nerve to finish the job as he hit a crucial boundary off Wahab in the last over. Quetta sealed a much deserved victory by 3 wickets with only two balls to spare. They remain unbeaten in the league and are firmly on top of the table.

MOHAMMAD AMIR TAKES STUNNING HAT-TRICK IN PAKISTAN SUPER LEAGUE

Mohammad Amir recently returned to competitive cricket after serving five-year fixing ban.
Dubai: Fast bowler Mohammad Amir, steadily rebuilding his career after being convicted of spot fixing, claimed a stunning hat-trick in the Pakistan Super League on Friday and admitted he is feeling great about his form.
The 23-year-old removed West Indian Dwayne Bravo with the second ball of the 19th over followed by the wickets of countryman Zohaib Khan and another Caribbean player, Kevon Cooper, to finish with 3-27 in his four overs.
His hat-trick restricted a star-studded Lahore team to 125-8 which Karachi Kings overhauled in 15.5 overs for a seven-wicket win.
“I am feeling great,” Amir told AFP. “With every game I am getting into my rhythm and it’s great for me as well as for Pakistan.”
Amir returned to international cricket in January, playing in the three-game Twenty20 series against New Zealand after completing a five-year ban in September last year.
Amir, along with Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif, was banned on charges of arranging deliberate no-balls during the Lord’s Test against England in 2010.
All three players were jailed in the UK in 2011.
Amir received some sympathy as he was just 18 at the time of the spot-fixing scandal and for pleading guilty before the courts.
That helped him clinch a relaxation in his ban in January last year after the International Cricket Council amended its code of conduct, allowing banned players to feature in domestic matches a few months prior to their suspension ending.
Amir took an impressive 86 wickets in four-day and Twenty20 domestic matches, which forced the selectors to include him on the tour of New Zealand.
The Pakistan Cricket Board is hosting its inaugural Twenty20 league with five teams competing at the neutral venues of Dubai and Sharjah.
The league ends on February 23.

pakistan super league:RUMAN RAEES – ISLAMABAD UNITED profile

‘My cricketing journey began from the UBL Cricket Academy, and from a very young age I knew I could play at the highest level. Cricket was an obsession for me, and I always dreamed of turning it into my profession. Growing up, I idolized the mighty Wasim Akram and wanted to emulate him. He had it all, a charming personality, a ferocious left arm and I was awed by his willingness to bowl in every situation. A true great in every sense of the word, he was my absolute hero! I started putting in the extra hours, working my socks off in training with the hope of representing Pakistan one day. I finally got to meet Wasim bhai for the very first time in 2015 in Karachi during one of our training camps, and to say it was a dream come true would be a massive understatement!
I started performing well at club level cricket during the earlier part of my career, which helped me get picked for Pakistan’s U-19 team. Fortunately for me, my form never left my side and my performances continued to improve. I finally made my debut in First Class List A and domestic T20 in 2010, and God has been kind ever since. I was the second highest wicket taker in our domestic T20 competition, and the highest wicket taker for Pakistan A in 2015, which is probably the highlight of my career so far. Everyone began to take notice, and I also got called up for the national camp, which was the absolute cherry on top! It was a great year for me! All that hard work was finally paying off.
HBLPSL is a great opportunity for me personally, and for all the emerging players involved. This is cricket at the highest level, and it doesn’t get any bigger than this. When the draft was announced, I was pretty confident of being selected as my performance spoke for itself. However, I was overwhelmed when I was the first pick from the ‘Emerging Players’ category, the sheer sense of pride and joy I felt at that time can’t be expressed in words, and for that I am grateful to Islamabad United.
Islamabad United has given me the perfect platform to progress and develop as a cricketer. I would be sharing the dressing room with the likes of Shane Watson, Andre Russell, Samuel Badree, and our test team captain, Misbah- Ul- Haq. I hope to learn a lot from all these players, and getting acquainted with an international ‘mahol’ would be vital in my development. I will also get to work with Dean Jones, who I always enjoyed watching on TV, and of course, my idol Wasim Akram would be mentoring us! Such opportunities do not come every day, and I hope to grab it with both hands and make it count.
My ultimate goal is to represent the Pakistan national team, and do justice to the role. This league is a small step towards that goal. Whenever I am done with my career, I want to be remembered as one of the cricketing greats of this country. ‘Meri pehchaan Pakistan ho’, that’s the dream!

ISLAMABAD UNITED VS KARACHI KINGS

United seal their first victory by 2 runs in a thrilling encounter against Kings
This was an important game for a struggling Islamabad United team as they searched for their first points, while Karachi Kings were looking to regroup after a crushing defeat from Quetta Gladiators by 8 wickets from the day before. The stage was set for a thrilling encounter between these two teams who were billed as favourites by many before the tournament began. Shoaib Malik won the toss and elected to field first, something which all teams seem to be doing other than Peshawar Zalmi. United’s opening pair had failed to make an impact so far in the HBL PSL and things were looked bright for them as Watson smashed Amir for a well timed six towards deep mid wicket early on and Sharjeel Khan seemed to be in good touch. Just as we began to feel it was Watson’s day, he was dismissed leg before by Imad Wasim in the fifth over. Out stepped Khalid Latif for the first time in the tournament and looked to take on Karachi’s bowling straight away. He hit Shakib for a glorious six and then showed similar treatment to Imad Wasim, and suddenly United were off to their best start so far with 71/1 after ten overs.
Kings clawed their way back in with an amazing bowling display, as Sharjeel was dismissed by Amir after scoring 28 from 27. Khalid (39 from 35) was bowled by Ravi Bopara next and Misbah’s men were in trouble once again. Wickets began to fall quickly as Ashar Zaidi got himself run out, and the young leg spinner Usama Mir bowled beautifully to get rid of Andre Russell soon after. In a span of 10 balls, United lost 4 wickets as their middle order collapsed like a deck of cards. After a decent start, United’s batting disappointed and failed to capitalize as Karachi’s bowling proved too hot to handle. Misbah threw away his wicket to Bopara, and Islamabad’s running between the wickets did not help much either as three of their batsmen got run out. Mohammad Sami provided a late surge for United towards the end of their innings, with a quick cameo of 20 runs from 9 deliveries, helping them reach 132/8. United could only manage to score 61 runs and lost seven wickets in their last ten overs. Karachi Kings must have felt pretty confident going into the break.
Islamabad United needed to pick up early wickets and that’s exactly what they did! Lendl Simmons was run out in the second over through some brilliant work by Ashar Zaidi in the outfield. Saeed Ajmal got James Vince on his very first delivery and Karachi were 3/2 in no time! Imad Wasim took the initiative and hit three consecutive boundaries against Ajmal and the Kings looked to pick up some momentum. Imad raced off to 29 runs before he edged one to Sam Billings off Andre Russell’s bowling. Sami bowled out Malik next as he dragged it onto the stumps and United were back in business. Shakib Al Hasan tried to get some runs flowing but he could only manage 20 from 22 as he was sent back to the pavilion along with Saifullah Bangash in the same over by Saeed Ajmal. With 15 overs gone, Karachi Kings were 87/7, needing 46 runs from 30 balls with three wickets in hand.
Ravi Bopara took it upon himself to take Karachi over the line and kept scoring quick runs. Sohail Tanveer was run out in the 17th over and it was all down to Bopara to finish the job. He batted brilliantly and smashed 18 runs off Mohammad Sami in the 18th over and added another 13 in the very next over with Usama Mir. Karachi needed 16 runs in the last over as Shane Watson took it upon himself to ensure United got their first victory of the tournament. Mir perished on the first ball as he tried to take a quick single and there was extreme tension in both camps. Amir smacked a boundary on the first ball he faced from Watson, followed that with two dots, before handing over the strike to Bopara. He was presented with a gift from Watson which he duly dispatched for six, and Karachi needed 4 runs from the last ball! Shane Watson bowled a neat yorker to ensure United scraped through by 2 runs. This was by far the match of the tournament and Dean Jones would be relieved to finally make his mark on the HBLPSL.
